James Hill Monument

Bottle Bank. Gateshead, Tyne and Wear

Blaxter sandstone, bronze.

Sited at the abutment of the Tyne Bridge the work celebrates the life of the renowned 19 C musician / composer of popular music of his time and resident of Bottle Bank. The work won a Civic Trust Award in 2009 and has become a place of pilgrimage for Hill aficionados worldwide. It incorporates a bench which is appropriately sited to offer a resting place before the steep descent to the quayside. The fiddle is a free standing and self supporting structure, it makes no contact with the abutment which is a scheduled ancient monument.
